The Details: WDRB shared that this incident happened over two years ago. They wrote, “It happened Jan. 19, 2023, around 1:30 p.m. at the Denny’s on Mulberry Street, just east of Interstate 65. “
- The affected couple was 72-year-old Lillian Curtis and her husband, 77-year-old Lloyd Curtis.
- The family of the married couple shared that “Lillian Curtis was in the back seat and suffered a ‘catastrophic’ head wound.” She died that same day.
- Her husband, Lloyd Curtis, died from his injuries a few days later, on Jan. 23.”
Additionally, the Courier Journal shared that “the couple’s daughter, Mary Graham, who was driving the car, was released from the hospital after being treated for chest injuries.”
Two Years Later, A Settlement Is Reached
After the married couple was crushed after the collapse of the Denny’s sign, their family sued Denny’s. The victim’s family argued that Denny’s could have done more to prevent the tragic accident.
- Police at the time argued that high winds caused the base of the sign to dislodge and collapse.
The Settlement: The details of the settlement have not been disclosed. However, when speaking to People Magazine, Denny’s did make the following statement.
- “Denny’s remains deeply saddened by the sign accident that took place at the Elizabethtown location in 2023. While the terms of the recent settlement are confidential, we hope this agreement brings some measure of closure to the Curtis family.”
The family shared a GoFundMe page after the accident occurred. Although it is no longer accepting donations, it shares information about the victims and the accident there as well.
