There are a few things that you should always double and triple-check before setting off for a flight. Of course, the first is a passport, but a close second has to be ensuring that you’re actually booking the right flight.

The amount of content I see online of US Americans with absolutely no clue about geography outside their country is staggering. Because of this, two US tourists have ended up booking a flight to the completely wrong continent.
How: While in Italy, the two tourists booked a flight to Nice. This is in France, and is only a short hop across Europe. However, instead of going to France, they booked a flight to Tunis in Tunisia, a country in North Africa. They may still be able to speak French there, but it’s definitely not the spot they were hoping to go.
- When asking to go “To Nice,” whoever it was that sold them the ticket heard “Tunis.” They then, without checking, took the tickets and went on their way. They were ushered through gate after gate, and then through boarding, thinking they were going to France, but heading to North Africa.

A Tourist Trap
Now, Tunis is a stunningly beautiful area of North Africa, and would certainly be a good spot for these tourists to go, but it’s not France. Due to their lack of geographical knowledge, they had repeatedly read Tunis on the various boarding gates and departure boards and not recognised that they were heading to the capital of another country entirely.
This is what happens when you get all your travel tips and knowledge from TikTok rather than education.
The Result: They spoke to the on-board staff, and they were told that they couldn’t get off. They had bought the wrong tickets, boarded the plane, and somehow not seen the repeated signs to Africa, not France. It was their fault. Unpacking their luggage would cause huge delays. They landed in Tunis and had to book flights back to France, but not before causing a huge stink.
Make sure you at least take a quick glance at Google Maps before heading to a new continent. You may end up in the wrong one otherwise.
