The NFL world was shaken last week with the death of former NFL star Rudi Johnson. The ex-athlete sadly committed suicide at a Florida apartment building.

What happened: Now, 911 reports are shedding light on the final tragic moments before Johnson’s death. According to TMZ, 911 callers reported that they heard screams and cries coming from an apartment building.
911 Calls: One 911 caller said that she witnessed Johnson jump from the balcony of the apartment building, located in Sunny Isles. The tragic incident happened around 11 p.m. ET on September 22.
- “It’s building in front of me, I just saw someone jump off the building … They jumped off the balcony into the pool,” the 911 caller said. “There was multiple people on the balcony … Somebody was screaming, saying, ‘Help me.’
- “I looked over and somebody was screaming ‘Help me, help me!’ screaming at at the top of their longs, so I looked over and I saw somebody just completely falling off the balcony.”
- The 911 caller also said, “I heard somebody screaming, saying, ‘Help! Help! Don’t do this. Don’t do this. Somebody help me. Somebody help me.’ It was a woman.”
Rudi Johnson Dies
Authorities later found Johnson and rushed him to the hospital. He was pronounced dead shortly after. Five people called 911 after Johnson’s suicide.
One person said they heard screaming.
- “I just heard people screaming and a huge … bang,” another said. “I heard people screaming for help in the pool … I heard a lot of screaming … And then a huge boom.”
Mental health struggles: According to friends and family, Johnson had suffered from a combination of mental health issues and a possible CTE. He played for eight years in the NFL, seven of which with the Cincinnati Bengals.
Mourning: Following his passing, his friends mourned his loss.
- “Rudi was a fine person and an excellent running back for us,” Bengals owner Mike Brown said in a statement. “He was dependable and productive as a player, and very popular among his teammates. Everyone liked him and saw him as a dear friend. We are deeply saddened by his passing.”
