Earlier in the week, Rep. John Lewis announced that he would skip the 2017 presidential inauguration. According to Lewis, he did not consider President-elect Donald Trump to be a legitimate president amid allegations that the 2016 presidential race was tampered by Russian interference.

Trump came out guns blazing on Saturday morning and criticized Lewis, who he claimed represented a crime-ridden district in Georgia.

“Congressman John Lewis should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to……mention crime infested) rather than falsely complaining about the election results. All talk, talk, talk – no action or results. Sad!” Trump wrote.
Shortly after that critique, many on social media pointed out that Lewis’ district, the Georgia 5th, was far from “crime infested” or “falling apart.”
According to The Hill, this may not be an accurate categorization.
“More than 87 percent of adults in the district are high school graduates, and more than 40 percent are college graduates, according to Census data. The median household income is just over $48,000,” The Hill reported.
Writer Wesley Lowery pointed out the irony behind Trump’s comments about Lewis, who is one of the last living leaders of the Civil Rights Movement.
“Trump – whose AG pick condemned by Coretta Scott King for prosecuting civil rights workers – now spending MLK weekend attacking John Lewis,” Lowery pointed out on Twitter.
‘While you avoided the draft, John Lewis risked his life for equality in America. You’ll never even dream of such selfless patriotism, Donald,” former presidential candidate Evan McMullin added.
Other’s took umbrage with Trump’s claim that Lewis was all talk. Many pointed out that Lewis had been a figurehead of civil rights longer than most had been alive.
