FOXBORO, Mass. — A local 6-year-old is making a difference in the world, one swing at a time.

Ryan McGuire teed off on cancer Wednesday, vowing to play 100 holes all in memory of his best friend, Danny Nickerson. Last summer, we got to knowNickerson when he asked for a few birthday cards and ended up getting thousands sent from across the globe!

McGuire’s mom said Nickerson was a “sweet, soft spoken little boy who loved Super Mario and Legos.”

After a brave battle, Nickerson died from an inoperable brain tumor earlier this year. But on Wednesday, his memory was very much alive. McGuire kept his word, and played golf all day long for his best friend.

“I’m not that tired, I’m doing well,” McGuire said on the course.

McGuire’s parents are extremely proud of their son.

“He’s so humble my husband and I couldn’t be more proud,” his mom said.

And Nickerson’s parents are proud, too.

“It’s amazing that someone from his class could care so much about him and do this. It’s a loss of words,” Nickerson’s dad said.

McGuire’s kindergarten class went to the course to cheer him on and helped raise money to help fight childhood cancer. For his birthday this year, McGuire asked for donations instead of gifts. His initial goal was to raise $2,500, but as of Wednesday evening, he’d racked up $30,000. To make a donation, click here.
