The mother of a Marine killed in Afghanistan is transforming the uniforms of fallen military personnel into teddy tears as a comforting memento to the surviving children of servicemen and women.

“There’s a smile that — kind of a tearful smile often — that comes from all of us. I don’t know about big but I think I’m making a difference. I kind of pray over the uniform while I’m going,” Lisa Freeman told CNN of the work that goes into her not-for-profit charitable organization.

The Matthew Freeman Project was founded in 2009 to advance the goals of the 29-year-old fallen Marine, who endeavored to “honor God by promoting communities of promise, prosperity, and peace,” according to the organization’s Facebook page — the Matthew Bear Project being one of the many services rendered to families worldwide.

The Georgia resident’s son was killed in combat in Afghanistan in 2009 only nine days after arriving in the country and would be happy to know his mother’s journey through grief includes comforting those who have faced similar tragedy.

“He’s loving that something good is happening out of something so tragic.”
