Although Bro Country might be substanceless and repetitive in its themes, once upon a time, country music had some pretty great yarns in its lyrics. A country song, originally sung by Vickie Lawrence, is going viral with its creepy and rather devastating lyrics.

The song, known as “The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia,” came out in 1972. The lyrics tell of a man finding that his wife had been unfaithful with two men. Heartbroken, he goes out to find one of the men she cheated on him with.
- However, he finds that the man was already dead. This doesn’t stop the local sheriff from clapping the man in irons and throwing him in jail. According to the lyrics of the creepy country song, he wanted to get home to dinner quickly, so he rushed the investigation.
Got the Wrong Man: The man, despite having bad intentions, did no wrong. The final verse of the country song is told from his sister’s perspective. As she watched him hang, she admitted that she was the one who killed the man as well as her brother’s cheating woman.
- As he swings, she speaks of the cheating wife, saying her body will never be found. As she says, there is no rage like that of a slighted family member.
Creepy Country Comeback
The song, originally written by Bobby Russel in 1972 for his wife to sing, has flown back to relevance thanks to Briley King. She has regaled TikTok with her wonderful voice and gotten the internet talking. Her rendition of The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia was beautifully sung.
- However, the creepy lyrics of the country song shocked some. They have become used to country music being about nothing but trucks and eyeing up your not-distant-enough cousins’ Daisy Dukes.

She’s got a hell of a voice and does the song a service. It’s certainly not most people’s first choice when it comes to country music. But the story told, with the twists and turns, certainly makes for a good tale of loss. betrayal and deception.
It might not be the spookiest of songs, but it’s a fitting country classic for anyone wanting to add a creepy touch to their playlist this Halloween.
