Florida Man Leads Police on Electric Scooter Escape, End Up In The Water

The best way to make a quick getaway from the cops is to hop on a stand-up electric scooter, then jump into a body of water.

At least, that seemed to be the philosophy of Jose Junior Vigil, 38, who was spotted driving a scooter at 2:47 in the morning near Key West, Florida.

There’s actually nothing wrong with riding a stand-up scooter at 2:47 a.m. Unless you don’t have headlights. It’s really needed for your own safety. Without lights or reflectors, an actual driver of a vehicle could plow into you — ruining their night and perhaps your life.

Anyway, as cops tried to pull over Vigil to talk about all this, he decided to … uh, “speed” away. For the record, the average top speed for an electric scooter is 25 mph. And that’s the absolute fastest ones.

But Vigil was vigilant. He even got tased — and just kept on going.

Eventually, he found a body of water, hopped off the scooter, and attempted to hide. It may have worked had the police not been about 10 feet from him at the time. At first, Vigil refused to exit the water, reports say.

When he finally did, he was arrested at booked at the local jail. The crime?  Fleeing and eluding, resisting arrest, possession of marijuana, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He may be able to get out of the fleeing charge with a good attorney. His best defense could be that he was trying to escape on something that is barely faster than the average bicycle. In fact, he may have just thought he was stationary.
