Breana Harmon Talbott, 18, ran into a church wearing no pants and bloody, and told witnesses she had been abducted and taken into the woods behind the church and gang raped. She was arrested Wednesday and charged with making a false report after confessing that the March 8 crime was a hoax, according to the Dallas Morning News.

The newspaper reported that police in the town of Denison, located near the Oklahoma border, said that her wounds were self-inflicted. Law enforcement officials were not amused by her make-believe story, and they plan to seek restitution for the cost of the investigation.

“It’s unfortunate a person can falsely report such a major incident in our community that wastes the time of law enforcement and needlessly puts some people in fear,” Chief Jay Burch said in a statement. “Breana Harmon Talbott’s hoax was also insulting to our community and especially offensive to the African-American community due to her description of the so-called suspects in her hoax. The anger and hurts caused from such a hoax are difficult and so unnecessary.”

The hoax started with a man who claimed to be the teen’s fiancé reportedly calling police and reporting her as missing. He said he found her vehicle outside an apartment in the 3800 block of Texoma Parkway about 5:30 p.m. with the driver’s door open. He said Talbott’s phone, keys and shoes were laying nearby.

Police mobilized all available resources in an attempt to find her, but they came up empty. She finally turned up about five miles away at New Creation Church. She claimed to have been abducted and raped.

“She said she was sexually assaulted and three black males in a black SUV took her,” Denison Police Lt. Mike Eppler told KXII after finding Talbott.

After being taken to the hospital, doctors discovered her wounds were not consistent with her story.

“It is our understanding that medical personnel who examined Talbott were unable to corroborate that Talbott had been sexually assaulted,” Burch said. “The puzzle pieces just weren’t coming together. We were unable to corroborate any of Talbott’s allegations that she had been abducted or sexually assaulted.”

While investigators say they quickly figured out she was lying, Talbott’s fiancé — now her ex-fiancé — is stunned. According to Fox 4, Sam Hollingsworth said he and Talbott had an argument the day she turned up at the church about the couple moving after he joined the Army, but he was dumbfounded about what happened.

“I was hurt. It was hard to take in whenever I found out about everything,” he said. “Somebody that I actually trusted and was planning on spending the rest of my life with could do something like this to me and everybody else in this community.”
