“Real Time with Bill Maher” guest has some advice for liberals: don’t “sound so f*****g condescending”

On Friday’s episode of “Real Time with Bill Maher,” host Bill Maher and guest Andrew Sullivan criticized Rachel Maddow’s overhyped reveal of President Trump’s 2005 tax return. Maher insisted that he respects and admires Maddow but argued that her Tuesday night reveal was a “big nothing-burger — worse than a nothing-burger; it was a help-Trump-burger.”

“This is probably the best tax return he’s ever filed, which makes me think this came from Donald Trump!” Maher said of the return, which showed that Trump paid about a 25 percent tax rate that year with $38 million paid in federal taxes on a $150 million yearly income. Many Americans previously thought the president had paid no federal taxes for some time.

Sullivan then suggested that perhaps people on the left are too condescending to those who don’t agree with them rather than trying to understand different points of view.

“There was a giant cloud of smug above Rachel Maddow when she was doing that,” he said. “Liberals have to be careful not to sound so fucking condescending and sum, as if they know it, and start actually engaging the other side and persuading people.”
