According to Fox News, at a Sprint car race on March 25 at Desoto Motor Speedway in Florida, 42-year-old Dave Steele died when the No. 33 car he was driving clipped the wheel of another car, toppling his vehicle and sending him into the track’s retaining wall.

It was the opening lap of the race between the first and second turn and the field had not yet had a chance to thin out. Fortunately, no other drivers were injured; however, the race halted immediately and the remainder of the race was respectfully cancelled.

NASCAR fans might see a haunting resemblance between this accident and the crash that took the life of racing legend Dale Earnhardt Sr. At first watch, it doesn’t seem like the kind of accident that would take a life. But, there is so much more going on in the car and on the track that you can only comprehend if you’re behind the wheel.

Dave was a veteran of Sprint racing who had also raced in Indy, Bush and ARCA series races. He was well-known for being a gentleman both on and off the track. Kyle Larsen, who won the checkered flag at Sunday’s NASCAR race at Fontana told the press that he and Dave were part of the same team for a race. He said it was an honor to be his teammate.

We send our condolences during this difficult time.
