Body Camera Shows Toddler Putting Her Arms Up as Dad Gets Arrested

When your dad gets arrested, you may never know what the police may have for you. So it may not be a bad idea to raise your hands, too.

That clearly was the philosophy of a barefoot toddler who walked toward police, her arms raised, as her father was put into the back of a cruiser.

The incident occurred in Tallahassee, Fla., with the suspect informing police he is the girl’s father. She then got out of the truck and walked toward the police.

“The officers stopped the vehicle and were following their training as they had the suspected armed adults step out of the truck,” said Tallahassee Police Chief Michael DeLeo in a video posted on Facebook.

“When, unexpectedly, a 2-year-old girl climbed out of the truck and imitated her parents by walking towards the officers with her hands raised.”

While whoever recorded the video claimed a police officer was “pointing a gun at the baby,” that was never the case. Instead, the officer on the body cam video can be heard reassuring the child that everything would be OK.

“You’re OK, come over here sweetie, you’re OK,” he said, before adding, “Sweetie, put your hands down, you’re fine.”

A 1-year-old toddler was also found in the truck, as was a gun. “A weapon is found in the backseat, although the gun looks real, it’s actually a pellet gun,” DeLeo said.

Two men were arrested and charged with theft. The toddlers, it appears, were eventually returned to their mothers. “This incident demonstrates the value of body worn cameras providing a different perspective of the same incident,” DeLeo said.
