An end to acting may be near for Ethan Hawke. At least, that’s the speculation after Hawke commented on his future.

Hawke, 51, has been an actor and director for more than 30 years. His most recent project was The Last Movie Stars. It was an HBO Max docuseries on the relationship between Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward.

From the sounds of things, he may be ready for retirement.

“I’ve definitely made the turn from being an old young person to being a young old person,” he told IndieWire. “But it’s the beginning of it, you know?”

Hawke suggested he may only retire from acting, though he didn’t mention his work behind the camera. He also made it seem as if he was just sort of thinking out loud.

“I definitely find myself looking over a filmography and thinking about which ones I could’ve cut out, because I only have so much time left,” he said. “I know I only have so many movies left.”

Hawke was married to actress Uma Thurman from 1998-2003, before finalizing their divorce in 2005. They have two children, and their oldest, Maya, 24, currently has a role on the Netflix hit Stranger Things. Hawke has been married to Ryan Shawhughes — a former nanny employed by Hawke and Thurman — since 2008.

Hawke came to prominence in 1998 in Dead Poets Society, and has gone on to star in Reality Bites, Gattaca, Training Day, Brooklyn’s Finest, 24 Hours To Live and The Black Phone, just to name a few.

“When I was younger, I was like, ‘I’ll do this, I’ll do that, that’ll be a good learning experience, and then I’ll try this,’ thinking I had all the time in the world.”

“Now, I’m like, ‘I didn’t learn anything from that one or that one, and that one would’ve been better spent in three months with my family.’”
