Luisa Fernanda Urrea is a hero.
The Colombian police officer was quick to act when she discovered a newborn baby girl in the woods who had her umbilical cord still attached, was starving and at risk of hypothermia. Urrea, who was a new mother herself, took the crying baby in her arms and nursed her with her own breast milk.
“I’m a new mother and I have milk, and I recognized the needs that this poor little creature had… I think any woman would have given her nourishment in the same circumstances,” she said.
Until she can be placed in an adoptive home, the baby is being cared for at the Colombian Family Welfare Institute.
