Three Female Inmates Seriously Injured After Being Attacked by Pit Bull

Three female inmates from a Casey County, Kentucky correctional facility were seriously injured by an aggressive pit bull as they were cleaning kennels at an animal shelter while on work release, police said.

The inmates had let the pit bull out of his cage to clean at the Casey County Animal Shelter.

The dog reportedly had not shown any signs of aggressiveness previously.

According to the Liberty Police Department, the pit bull “turned aggressiveā€¯ and went after four inmates. Three of the inmates were bitten by the dog multiple times and were taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries, per reports. The fourth was able to escape without being attacked.

Police quickly put the dog down after it continued to act aggressively after they arrived, Chief Steven Garrett said.

The inmates assist the shelter with walking, feeding and general care for the animals.

Cassey County has a population of about 15,000, with Liberty as the county seat. It is part of Kentucky’s Appalachian region.
