No, Americans will not see a $2,500 decrease in medical premiums

The president made a promise to the American people in 2009 — he told the country that the average family will see medical premiums drop by $2,500.

Though the administration has recently been reluctant to confirm or deny this cost reduction, a release from the White House Wednesday revealed that the premium sin 36 states will be increased under the Obamacare exchanges.

“Today, the Administration confirmed that the President will not keep his promise that Americans will see a $2,500 decrease in their premiums,” said House Ways and Means committee chairman Dave Camp (R-Mich.).

The Ways and Means committee has been pressing the administration now for months for answers on this question.

“Their announcement made clear that Americans across the country will pay more for health care.  Hardworking people in the state of Michigan could pay almost 100 percent more than they do today.  Americans need relief from this unworkable law, it is only fair.”

Not only will premiums go up in the majority of states, but for many, they will rise significantly. Tennessee in particular, tripled the cost for premiums for men, and double for women.

From the White House release:

  • Today, a 27-year-old man in Memphis can buy a plan for as low as $41 a month. On the exchange, the lowest state average is $119 a month — a 190 percent increase.
  • Today, a 27-year-old woman in Nashville can also buy a plan for as low as $58 a month. On the exchange, the lowest-priced plan in Nashville is $114 a month — a 97 percent increase. Even with a tax subsidy, that plan is $104 a month, almost twice what she could pay today.
  • Today, women in Nashville can choose from 30 insurance plans that cost less than the administration says insurance plans on the exchange will cost, even with the new tax subsidy.
  • In Nashville, 105 insurance plans offered today will not be available in the exchange.

Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander said of the news:

“Why should a 27-year-old male in Memphis be forced to pay nearly three times more than what he pays today for health insurance? Why should a young woman in Nashville have to pay twice as much? This isn’t what President Obama promised Tennesseans, but it’s what he’s giving them — higher costs and less choice — that are two of the most urgent reasons Obamacare must be repealed and our health care system fixed.”

Following Sen. Cruz (R-Texas) inability to defund Obamacare through measures to fund the federal government, there is talk that the House will seek to delay the implementation of the law for a year for individuals, as part of a debt ceiling compromise.

“The House Republican leadership is seriously considering attaching a one-year delay of Obamacare’s individual mandate to the Senate bill to avert a government shutdown,” Politico reports.
