‘Kinky Boots’ has fun at the Tonys

Cyndi Lauper and her “Kinky Boots” just had a fun night at Sunday’s Tony Awards and Neil Patrick Harris proved for a fourth time that he’s got the job as host for as long as he wants it, thanks to his standout song-and-dance comic performance.

“Kinky Boots” walked off New York’s Radio City Music Hall stage with the most awards in an evening that was female dominated with Best New Musical going to Lauper’s score for he best new musical winner. Veterans Cecily Tyson and Judith Light gave memorable acceptance speeches. Winning best actress in a play for her role in “The Trip to Bountiful,” 88-year-old Tyson received two standing ovations.

 
For her role in “The Assembled Parties,” Light won her second Tony as many years in the best featured actress in a play category. The TV star is best known for her role in “Who’s the Boss?” Andrea Martin won best featured actress in a musical for “Pippin.” Other women who took home trophies were Diane Paulus for the best revival (“Pippin”) and Pam McKinnon for her revival of “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.” Christopher Durang’s dysfunctional-family satire “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” won for best play.

 
The awards show musical numbers took aim at other industries, especially TV, while several Hollywood personalities who were nominated a Tony did not win, notably Tom Hanks in “Lucky Guy,” who lost to Tracy Letts for his role as George in “Virginia Woolf.” Also snubbed were Scarlett Johansson, Bette Midler and Jessica Chastain.

 
Billy Porter, who won best actor in a musical for his role as a drag queen in “Kinky Boots especially thanked his co-star and co-nominee, Stark Sands, saying “I share this award with you. I’m gonna keep it at my house — but I share it with you.” Courtney B. Vance won best featured actor in “Lucky Guy,” his first win in three nominations. A list of winners:

  • Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play: Cicely Tyson in “The Trip to Bountiful”
  • Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical: Billy Porter in “Kinky Boots”
  • Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical: Patina Miller in “Pippin”
  • Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Play: Courtney B. Vance in “Lucky Guy”
  • Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play: Judith Light in “The Assembled Parties”
  • Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical: Gabriel Ebert in “Matilda The Musical”
  • Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Musical: Andrea Martin in “Pippin”
  • Best Direction of a Play: Pam MacKinnon for “Who’s Afraid of Virgina Woolf?”
