Bill Murray, Dalai Lama Story From ‘Caddyshack’ is Pure Comedy Gold

When Bill Murray showed up on the set of Caddyshack, he was still a relatively small name in the acting world — so small, in fact, that he was only on set for six days, and his role was just supposed to be a cameo appearance.

However, the actor was so hilarious that he earned a speaking role and a handful of scenes. And we’re certainly very thankful for that, as it’s almost impossible to imagine Caddyshack without Bill Murray.

Since Murray was only supposed to be a cameo appearance, he improvised almost all of his lines. According to IMDb, the “Dalai Lama scene” was just Murray riffing, and Peter Bekrot, who listened to the story, was genuinely nervous during the scene because the pitchfork Murray was holding was real.

The scene is actually such a big deal that when ABC got the opportunity to sit down with the actual Dalai Lama, they asked him if he plays golf. The monk laughed and said he sticks to ping pong.
