Dr. Oz Visits Turkey and Syria as Earthquake Death Toll Surpasses 23,000

Dr. Mehmet Oz, former Pennsylvania US Senate candidate, said that he traveled to Turkey and Syria after the magnitude 7.8 earthquake tragically left more than 20,000 people dead. The world-renowned cardiologist and television host, who has dual citizenship in Turkey, posted several images on social media wearing the official Orange Republic Of Turkey Ministry Of Interior Disaster And Emergency Management Presidency, (AFAD) vest while working with children.

Oz stated that he visited several refugee camps on both sides of the Syrian and Turkish border asking for donations to the International Federation of Red Cross in order to help those that were affected by the earthquake. IFRC is a worldwide humanitarian aid organization that has reached 160 million people each year through its 192-member National Societies. Along with Red Crescent Societies, they launched Emergency Appeals for CHF 200 million to help thousands.

Several Aid was sent to Turkey on the 5th day after the earthquake killed more than 22,000 people. Today, several Turks and Syrians gathered for traditional prayers and tragically buried the dead reflecting on their loss. In Turkey,  the death toll of 19,875  has surpassed the 1999 earthquake that traumatized the nation and changed Turkish politics for several decades. Authorities in Syria have reported a total of 3,384  dead, and thousands more injured in Monday’s magnitude 7.8 and -7.5 earthquakes.

Rescuers were reportedly still finding people alive under the wreckage of buildings on Friday morning, which is more than 100 hours after the earthquakes, giving teams rare moments of joy amid the destruction.

In the 105th hour of the natural disaster, rescuers went on to save a baby boy and his 7-year-old brother in the Providence of Kahramanmaras, according to the state-run Anadolu news agency.  Rescuers also found a 36-year-old survivor who was reunited with her husband in the southern Turkish province of Hatay,  as well as two sisters who heroically pulled out alive.

The government has implemented state of emergency powers in the regions that were affected by the earthquakes, saying it had deployed thousands of armed forces to the areas for disaster relief. According to the country’s disaster management agency, it evacuated 75, 780 people from earthquake-hit regions.
