Initial Report

The Westchester County Police department released a statement regarding the details of the accident. One of the boys, 16, was driving a Nissan Rogue on the Hutchinson River Parkway when it crashed and caught fire after colliding with a tree. There were no other cars involved in the accident.

There were six children total in the vehicle; five boys and one girl all between the ages of 8 and 17. The surviving boy, 9, was seated in the hatchback of the vehicle at the time of the crash and was able to crawl to safety through the back of the vehicle. He was transported to Westchester Medical Center for non-life-threatening injuries sustained from the crash.

Additional Details

The names of the children have not been released to the public. The family is being notified by police.

Superintendent of Schools for Derby, Connecticut, Matt Conway, informed the Associated Press that the students were related, and he had contacted the father to provide support.

“It’s the unimaginable,” Conway shared. “Having to now make arrangements for five of your children to be buried is a very difficult thing for anyone — one child, never mind five that you’re going to have to now make arrangements for.”

A GoFundMe has been set up for the family.

The tragic crash is still being investigated by the Westchester County Police Accident Investigation Team and the General Investigations Unit.

News outlet ABC has reported that the 16-year-old driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, causing him to lose control of the vehicle.

Nicole Cross, the mother of some of the children, shared a post on Facebook. “Lord Jesus I don’t understand why you had to take our babies from us. Please give us the strength Lord God,” Cross said. “These kids didn’t deserve this like why is this happening please keep my family in your prayers…. don’t know what to do or how to handle this God please help us.”
