Wasps already suck, but nuclear wasps are a whole new level of awful.

The US has a massive arsenal of nuclear weapons. Enough to turn the planet into a shiny marble 10 times over. And, for these weapons of mass destruction to be built, a lot of testing had to be done. The testing and construction were carried out across the country, away from civilisation.
What happened: However, just because people were kept away from the nuclear sites, wasps weren’t. In the Savannah River Site near Aiken, California, a wasp’s nest was found among a lot of radioactive material. They had posted up on a pole close to the storage of liquid nuclear waste.
- On investigation, it appeared that the wasps were 10 times over the allowed limit for radiation. Before the nuclear wasps escaped and started mutating people with their radioactive stings, pest control sprayed them.
However, no wasps were found at the site, which is also a little concerning.
Possible Leak Caused Nuclear Wasps
The official report said that no leak was found leading to the nuclear wasps. They stated that no further investigation was needed. However, a watchdog group says that their report was incomplete at best, and the situation is far from closed.
Watchdog speaks out: The watchdog group says that there is no investigation as to where the nuclear contamination originated. If the nuclear wasp’s nest was over 10x the permitted levels, where did it come from? They are insisting that further investigations be made.
- “I’m as mad as a hornet that SRS didn’t explain where the radioactive waste came from or if there is some kind of leak from the waste tanks that the public should be aware of,” the executive director of the group said.
Thankfully, for us, wasps rarely fly far from their nests, and this one was well within the nuclear waste areas’ boundaries. Hopefully, these radioactive wasps haven’t developed some kind of nuclear superpowers. Nobody needs to be getting stung by some kind of mutant wasp.
I know Spider-Man was created by a radioactive spider, but I feel like the reality of a nuclear wasp sting would be much more tragic.
