Stephen Colbert took time this week to mock his audience for being unable to smile during his monologue because his studio still requires guests to wear masks.

The audience, seemingly unaware that they were being mocked, cheered and applauded as the camera showed them universally masked.
In addition to being masked, his audience is also required to present proof of COVID-19 vaccination in order to attend his show.

The joke occurred during a portion of his monologue where Colbert discussed the Biden Administration’s plan to end the COVID state of emergency in May.
They have promised this before, but have chosen to renew the emergency many times.
This is not the first time that Colbert has become visually obsessed with COVID restrictions on his show. Last year, Colbert performed a notoriously awful skit called ‘the Vax-scene’ where male dancers appeared as vials of COVID-19 vaccine.
It would be easy to dismiss Colbert as a simple comedy host, but his political activism is very real. He has close relationships with major Democrats like Chuck Schumer.
He can be seen in the video dancing with Schumer in New York City amongst the most vicious of the pandemic restrictions. This was also during the fall of Afghanistan where 13 U.S. Servicemembers were killed because of the incompetence of our leaders.
While he forces his audience to wear masks and present vaccine passports, Colbert himself has no problem parading around public and dancing closely with people with no mask.
