The Details: Shivani Kevat, a 15-year-old girl, was going about her day. Local police shared that she was by the river, filling up her pots when the attack occurred. The crocodile emerged from the water and dragged the girl in with it.
- The Hindustan Times reported that nearby villagers tried to assist the girl by chasing the reptile in the river with their boats. They hoped to scare the creature into releasing its prey.
- A search operation ensued, but after hours of no success, the search was called off.
- Kevat’s body naturally surfaced the following day.
The Cause Of Death

Despite the alarming attack, Kevat’s body revealed that it was not the attack itself that caused her to die. Instead, the autopsy revealed that the young girl had died of drowning. Although the alligator dragged the young girl into the river, the Hindustan Times shared “her body bore no critical injuries apart from deep wounds on her arms.” Those wounds were believed to have been inflicted when the animal attacked her, gripping her within its jaws.
- Once the autopsy was performed, Kevat’s body was returned to her family.
- According to The Independent, authorities assume that the crocodile involved in the attack was a mugger crocodile.
- Mugger crocodiles, also known as marsh crocodiles, are the world’s third most dangerous crocodile species. They are aggressive and can be found in rivers, lakes, and reservoirs, which puts them into close contact with humans.
One of Many: Unfortunately, this attack is not an isolated incident. Just last summer, in July of 2024, another young girl lost her life to a crocodile attack. A 12-year-old girl was going for a swim in Australia when she was viciously attacked. Similar to Kevat’s story, this young girl’s remains also washed up the day after her attack.
