Before Kathie Lee Gifford opened up about the death of her husband Frank Gifford on Monday, she congratulated coworker Jenna Bush-Hager about the birth of her second daughter, Poppy.

Gifford used that sentiment to segway into explaining the idea that “the Lord giveth and the Lord taketh away.”

“That’s something that my family and I went through last week,” Gifford said.

Gifford then gave viewers a brief biography of her deceased husband, reminding them that he was always a man of deep faith, something instilled in him as a little boy.

“They had nothing, but they had their faith,” Gifford  said.

“Every time they moved to a new town, they’d go to church every week as a family, and, as a young child, Frank asked Jesus into his heart and that stayed with Frank his entire life.”

In her re-introduction to the show, Gifford focused on her husband’s faith, noting that his biggest fear was growing sick and becoming a burden for his family.

In a way, Gifford’s sudden death was exactly how he would have wanted to go.

“So I think the Lord for that, for his grace to us as a family,” Gifford added.
