The bill had been scrutinized by the Republican representatives in the House Freedom Caucus, as well as Republican senators and several prominent conservative groups. President Trump and other members of his administration met with the caucus to strike a compromise. But nearly an hour before the scheduled vote on Friday, House Speaker Paul Ryan pulled the bill.

One member of the House Freedom Caucus, Rep. Ted Poe (R-Texas), then decided to resign from the caucus. He explained his actions during a Monday segment of CNN’s “New Day:”

“Because the Freedom Caucus has always been the opposition caucus against the Democrats. And now when we are in the majority, it continues to be the opposition caucus against anything in the Republican Party,” he explained.

Poe said that Trump and members of his administration spent an hour and a half with the House Freedom Caucus.

The Texas representative said that he was “angry” at the decision to say no. He also suggested that saying no was overly simplistic.

“I got the opinion that there are some members of the Freedom Caucus that would vote no against the Ten Commandments,” he observed. Poe stated a desire for the members of the caucus to compromise.
