If you’ve ever seen the movie “A Bronx Tale,” you know the character of “Mush” — the sad sack part of the Chazz Palminteri gang who can’t get anything right. As a matter of fact, anything he touches turns to a total failure — quite literally, to mush. Maybe you’re more familiar with William H. Macy’s turn in The Cooler, where casinos send him to gamblers having hot streaks to cool them off. Or, perhaps you’re more familiar with the most current turn in the role of “the guy who gets it wrong everytime and is a total buzz kill.” That would be Sen. John McCain.

Sen. McCain was speaking about former Secretary of Defense Bob Gates’s new book, titled “Duty: Memoirs of Secretary at War,” and its unflattering depiction of President Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. While being interviewed by Candy Crowley on CNN, Sen. McCain said of the writing of the book:
I think, frankly, I might’ve — if I had given him advice — I would’ve waited,’ McCain said. ‘As far as waiting until it’s over in Afghanistan, I wouldn’t have done that. But maybe [in] retrospect, a little longer than now.
Translation: I think it’s right for Bob Gates to speak out, but he shouldn’t have spoken out. Not now, maybe later. Another time, maybe next Tuesday, although that might be too soon. You see, when I say too soon, I mean just not right now, but, you know, sometime, you know. In the future, but not too far in the future. I mean, he doesn’t have to wait for flying cars to appear. Wouldn’t that be cool? Flying cars? That would be sweet. Is it my nap time yet?
McCain is mush. Moreover, it’s Sen. McCain being classic McCain. He gives his voice to those he’s supposedly against by speaking out against the people who bring honesty to the conversation. Sec. Gates is free to speak whenever he likes. He can write books all he wants, until he has no more stories to tell and decides to go full Shia LaBeouf.
And what is Sen. McCain’s real issue? That the book was written too soon, or that it was written too honestly? Is it wrong to notice, as Sec. Gates has, that the President and Ms. Clinton were more interested in politics than policy? Sen. McCain went on to say this about Gates: “He’s obviously very frustrated and felt — which, by the way, surprised all of us who know him — and he’s decided to really kind of let loose.”
Sec. Gates is frustrated. The families of Brian Terry, Amb. Stevens, Tyronne Woods, Glenn Doherty and Sean Smith are frustrated. The American people are frustrated; with Obamacare, with the NSA spying on them, with the IRS attacking them. Why isn’t Sen. McCain frustrated as well? Why, in the middle of scandal, constitutional assault and flirty selfies is Sen. McCain not frustrated? Why is he speaking out against those who voice their frustration?
What else do you expect from mush?
