“My dad sat me down, and that was the beginning of music for me,” he said.

Though Rhodes’ parents loved that he played music, they expressed that they didn’t necessarily want it to become his career.

Rhodes moved out of his parents’ house in Buffalo and headed to New York City, where he played in bars and clubs. Eventually, he fell into drugs and drinking.

This audition meant much more to Rhodes than the opportunity for musical success. He wanted to show his father, who hadn’t seen him perform since he was a boy, that he could be proud of his only son.

Rhodes’ cover of Avicii’s “Wake Me Up” brought his father to tears.

Seems like he made his old man proud, after all.
