Diet Coke is better for you than regular Coke, that much we know. Zero calories, zero sugar.

But here’s something else that’s not a shock: It’s not as good for you as some other beverages that have calories, according to the experts. Or such as, you know, water.

Of course, water can be boring.

So what makes Diet Coke so questionable when it comes to a choice of something other than water? Well, for one, the sodium content. Also, it still features the caramel coloring of its calorie-filled counterpart, as well as artificial sweeteners. Both are said to come with their own fair share of safety risks.

What Happens To Your Body When You Drink Diet Coke Every Day

“Individuals vary widely in their reactions to these substances,” said Sharon Fowler, epidemiologist at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, via Live Science. “Because of the very real possibility that irreversible cumulative effects [occur]… I’m convinced that we’re in the middle of a very large-scale experiment, and that the whole story of the potential impact of diet sodas on health may not be known for years to come.”

Again, Diet Coke or Coke Zero are better options than the straight version. Better than, but not the absolute best, it appears.

“[Like] a glass of low-fat milk or 100% fruit juice, if we’re talking about calories,” Keri Gans, registered dietitian and spokesperson for the American Dietetic Association, via Live Science. “Ideally, if you want to consume something with zero calories, water is your best choice.”

Ah, yes. Water. It trumps everything else.

Still, there are risks with everything, and depending on your fitness goals, there are worse things in the world than Diet Coke. Like regular Coke.
