You no longer have to look through the lens of a court camera to see Johnny Depp. After all, the actor made his first major appearance since the Amber Heard defamation trial. He surprised his fans by showing up to the MTV Video Music Awards.

Per CBS News:
“Hovering down from the ceiling, Depp, or rather a digital depiction of his face, appeared inside the helmet of the VMA mascot, the Moon Person.”
Depp, 59, generally was used to assist the transition between the awards and the music. He entertained the audience by cracking a few jokes along the way.
“Hey, you know what?” he asked. “I needed the work.”
Another time he told the audience that he’s also available “for birthdays, bat mitzvahs, weddings, wakes, any old thing you need.”
He wasn’t finished.
“Anything. You name it. Oh, I’m also a dentist,” he added.
Depp’s appearance was considered a comeback of sorts. This was his returned the entertainment world for the first time since winning the popularity contest — and the trial — also involving Heard. Depp sued Heard for defamation based on a 2018 op-ed she wrote for the The Washington Post. Back then she described herself as as “a public figure representing domestic abuse.”Â

While she never mentioned Johnny Depp by name, the accusation was clear. A jury awarded Depp $15 million in damages, and gave $2 million to Heard, who counter-sued.
Not everyone was thrilled with Depp’s appearance at the VMA’s.
“MTV you’re disgusting and clearly desperate!” Heard’s sister, Whitney Heard, wrote on her Instagram story. “I really hope that none of the people that made this call have daughters.”
Earlier in August it was announced that Amber Heard was switching her legal counsel in order to appeal the defamation trial verdict.
