The film premiered at the 2022 Venice Film Festival and received a 14-minute standing ovation. It reportedly left actress Ana de Armas in tears, as relayed by Yahoo Entertainment. De Armas portrays Monroe in the movie.

Brad Pitt serves as producer of the project, with Andrew Dominik as director. Along with de Armas, Adrien Brody and Julianne Nicholson co-star. All took the red carpet in Venice, with Pitt wearing a protective mask to sign autographs and take selfies with fans.

“Marilyn Monroe is a singular Hollywood and pop culture icon that transcends generations and history,” said Marc Rosen, president of entertainment at Authentic Brands Group (ABG). ABG owns the Marilyn Monroe Estate. “Any actor that steps into that role knows they have big shoes to fill. Based on the trailer alone, it looks like Ana was a great casting choice as she captures Marilyn’s glamour, humanity and vulnerability. We can’t wait to see the film in its entirety!”

This statement was at least partially the result of de Armas receiving some grief for being cast as Monroe in the first place.

“Ahead of its world premiere, Blonde earned some blowback from moviegoers on social media due to de Armas’ casting,” Yahoo Entertainment wrote. “Viewers were critical of de Armas’ accent in the film after an official trailer was released at the end of July. The majority of complaints about de Armas’ casting noted that she maintained her Cuban accent and did not channel Monroe’s breathy vocals. The Marilyn Monroe estate defended de Armas’ casting despite not being involved in the making of the film.”

Blonde will be released worldwide by Netflix on Sept. 28.
