Popeyes Calls Police on Student Trying To Buy Food For Homeless Man

One Georgia State University woman merely wanted to serve the needy, but Popeye’s in Atlanta called the police on her instead.

Jo Ortega, the woman in question, said she was picking up food at a Popeye’s for a DoorDash order when she spotted a homeless man who looked like he could use a meal. So she decided to order him some chicken.

But Ortega claimed workers at that particular Popeye’s branch prohibited the transaction. She posted a TikTok video of the interaction as evidence.

When she first asked to order for the homeless man at the drive-thru window … well, the window was closed in her face.

So she asked to speak to the manager.

That too proved fruitless, as another employee also closed the window on Ortega, saying that “you can’t do it. I could care less about you recording me, baby.”

Was Popeyes in the Wrong?

That’s about when the police were called, Ortega said.

“At that moment I was terrified, I thought I was gonna get arrested,” she told FOX 5 Atlanta. “Maybe I should just call my family, and I might not be coming home tonight.”

Why Popeye’s called the police, well, we have no idea. Perhaps they felt Ortega wasn’t leaving the window in a timely fashion.

No arrests were made. Just the opposite, actually.

“The officer pulled me to the side and said, ‘I really thank you for doing that, thank you for buying him food. I appreciate that,” Ortega said.

Eventually, Popeyes’ general manager reached out to Ortega and allowed her and the man to order anything they wanted — for free.

In a follow-up video, a man holding a Popeye’s cup thanked Ortega.

“My name is Jazz and thanks,” he said.

  1. That happened to me also.I tried to buy food for a homeless man at a restaurant in Chapel Hill NC.The cashier insisted that I not buy food for the man.The man was a bit drunk but was asking for a meal.I even offered to give him money to buy food for himself but the cashier refused to give him food even though I was paying for it.I was very shocked that people are turned away from buying food at restaurants for various reasons. The man hung out outside the restaurant with some other men who were also just hanging around. The man was not bothering or threatening anyone but was simply trying to get some food.I believe anyone should be able to buy a meal for someone less fortunate whether they deserve it or not.

  2. This is just another example of the condition of the world men will be lovers in places of themselves there should be no reason for not wanting to feed a hungry person didn’t Jesus say I was hungry and did you feed me I was thirsty and did you bring me a drink so ladies people that’s refusing to give somebody hungry food they will pay for it they certainly well did they will come it’s amazing how things can be turned around he just don’t know when it’s gonna happen but it will happen….
