Macy’s has announced dozens of stores that will close as part of a previously announced plan to restructure the retailer’s operations.

Macy’s revealed in August 2016 that it would close 100 of its 730 stores to concentrate on better-performing locations to “elevate their status as preferred shopping destinations.”

In a January 4 news release, Macy’s announced 68 of the store closures. Of the 68, three have already closed, 63 will close in early spring 2017, and two will be closed in mid-2017.

The company plans to close approximately 30 additional stores over the next few years as leases expire or sale transactions are completed.


Already completed 2016 closings

  • Laurel Plaza, North Hollywood, Calif. (475,000 square feet; opened in 1995; 105 associates)
  • Ala Moana Jewel Gallery, Honolulu, Hawaii (2,000 square feet; opened in 1986; 9 associates)
  • Valley Fair, West Valley City, Utah (106,000 square feet; opened in 1970; 53 associates)

Already announced closings

Final clearance sales at the following Macy’s stores closing in early 2017 will begin on Monday, January 9, and run for approximately eight to 12 weeks (with the exception of Lancaster Mall*, where final clearance sales are already in progress):

Stores sold (or to be sold) and leased back

These stores have been or will be sold, and Macy’s will continue to operate them on leases from the owners:

  • Stonestown Galleria, San Francisco, Calif. (280,000 square feet; opened in 1952; 204 associates)
  • Union Square Men’s, San Francisco, Calif. (248,000 square feet; opened in 1974; 256 associates; as previously announced)
  • Tyson’s Galleria, McLean, Va. (265,000 square feet; opened in 1988; 122 associates; as previously announced)

According to the release, the company expects about 3,900 employees to be displaced throughout the process, but some may be able to get a job at another location.

Additional reductions at central operations will result in another 6,200 job cuts, Macy’s said:

“Associates displaced by store closings may be offered positions in nearby stores where possible. Eligible full-time and part-time associates who are affected by the store closings will be offered severance benefits.”

Surviving Macy’s stores will add new vendor shops, expand personal shopping services and hold in-store events, the retailer said.
