Typically, a NASCAR driver receives their injuries in their car, at over a hundred miles an hour, not stationary, outside of it.

It was while celebrating in the Victory Lane of Watkins Glen that Connor Zilisch fell from the top of his car. As he stood atop it, posing for pictures and thanking his fans, he lost his footing. Stepping sideways, he caught his foot in the webbing of the window beneath him.

As he tried to step down, the flapping webbing held him fast, and he flipped a full 180. The results looked very painful. He slammed onto the ground, headfirst, and seemed to be unconscious for a short time. He had taken his helmet off too early.

The results were a broken collarbone and at least a few weeks of rest. NASCAR driver Conor Zilisch is hoping to heal his broken collarbone in time for the NASCAR Xfinity Series championship.

NASCAR Driver Sees The Funny Side

His broken collarbone won’t allow Connor Zilisch to jump right back in his NASCAR machine, but he’s on the road to recovery. Speaking on his social media, he shared his experiences and his planned absence. “Wanted to give everyone a quick update. Had surgery on my collarbone this morning to get a plate and screws to help with the healing process. Been a tough few days for me mentally, but all the love you guys have shown has certainly helped. Thank you”

As a result of his NASCAR rooftop tumble, there have been some rumblings about changing the rules around Victory Lane celebrations. But, NASCAR is inherently dangerous. The governing body isn’t about to change celebrations.

Instead, they may take a look at the webbing on the windows of the cars. Zilisch himself blamed the flapping net for his fall. “The last thing I remember, I was split on the door so I had one leg in and one leg out of the car,” he said on the Door Bumper Clear podcast. “The last I remember, and I don’t know why, but I thought I was going to break my femur. My leg was stuck. I thought I was done.”
