Ashton Kutcher wasn’t just Mila Kunis’ That ’70s Show co-star. He was her high school crush and her first kiss. The actress was just 14 years old when she locked lips with her future husband for the first time. The hunky Kutcher was 19.

Mila Kunis Meets Ashton Kutcher

Mila Kunis’ family moved to Los Angeles from Ukraine when she was in second grade. It was a tough transition for Kunis but she quickly found her footing as a child actress, finding steady work in TV and commercials before landing her big break in 1998: a role on a new Fox sitcom, That ’70s Show. She was 14 at the time.

Everyone auditioning was required to be 18, but Kunis lied to the producers, saying she would turn 18. Which was, technically, true. It wasn’t long before Fox found out but by then, it didn’t matter. Kunis was clearly perfect for the role of Jackie Bernhardt: the pretty rich girl of the Point Place gang. Fittingly, Jackie was supposed to be the youngest character.

And so, Kunis literally grew up on the show. And the very first milestone was an on-screen kiss. For Kunis, this also doubled as the first kiss of her life. At the start of the show, her character Jackie is dating Michael Kelso, played by a then-unknown Ashton Kutcher. Naturally, Kunis developed a crush. But the hunky Kutcher was 19 at the time of filming which made their pairing pretty awkward.

Kunis also claims that Kutcher tried to french her — on a dare from Danny Masterson. The pair playfully discussed it with Rosie O’Donnell in 2002. Kutcher maintains his innocence.

As Jackie and Kelso would date on-and-off throughout the show’s eight-year run, a friendship developed between the performers. However, both maintain that it was strictly platonic. “Like, Ashton did my chemistry homework for me,” Kunis once said of their early relationship.

It would be more than a decade before things heated up.

Years Apart

After the end of That ’70s Show, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis both lived very full, very separate lives. In 2005, Kutcher married Demi Moore who was recently divorced from Bruce Willis. A surprising couple, they remained together until 2012 and Kutcher helped to raise her three daughters. Meanwhile, Kunis dated actor Macaulay Culkin from 2002 to 2011.

Both recently single, in 2012, Kunis and Kutcher presented at the Golden Globes. And there was a definite spark.

A Rom-Com Reunion

After running into each other at the Golden Globes, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis — finally — shared their first off-screen kiss.

Kutcher described the moment to Howard Stern in 2017, saying that Kunis wanted to shotgun smoke out of his mouth. Hot. “It was kind of obvious that things were happening,” Kutcher said. From there, things escalated… but Kunis and Kutcher both wanted to remain friends.

In 2011, Kunis starred alongside Justin Timberlake in No Strings Attached. That very same year, Kutcher starred in Friends with Benefits alongside Natalie Portman. In case you can’t tell from the titles, these were essentially the same film following the exact same premise: two buddies agree to casual sex. Spoiler alert: they all get together, the end.

And the exact same thing happened to Kunis and Kutcher. Kunis even made the connection directly when talking to Marc Maron on his WTF podcast in 2018. “I did a movie called Friends With Benefits. He did a movie that was very similar… We lived our movies out, where we were like, ‘Let’s just hook up. Let’s have fun,” Kunis said. They both trusted each other and began a secret, laid-back fling. Things worked out perfectly… for about three months. That’s when Kunis realized she’d caught feelings for her old high school crush.

When Kunis found out that Kutcher was seeing other people, she said it felt like getting punched in the gut. “‘Oh my god,'” she thought to herself. “‘I love this man, and I have to walk away because this is not the agreement that we had.'” Kunis almost did walk away. But instead, she spoke up. She told Kutcher how she felt and asked him to move in.

At that point, Kutcher had only been unmarried for about a year, but he stepped up to the new relationship. In 2014, they had their daughter Wyatt and married the following year. In 2016, they had their son Dimitri.

A cinematic ever-after for everyone’s favorite TV couple.
