James Caan passing took Hollywood by shock when the legendary actor passed. TMZ obtained a copy of his official death certificate from Los Angeles County. The document lists Myocardial Infarction and Coronary Heart Disease as the causes of Caan’s death.
Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease and Congestive Heart Failure is listed as significant conditions contributing to Caan’s death, but not resulting in the underlying causes.
Myocardial Infarction is the technical word for heart attack. Johns Hopkins explains that a heart attack occurs “when one or more areas of the heart muscle don’t get enough oxygen. This happens when blood flow to the heart muscle is blocked.”
Caan Suffered From Numerous Conditions
Coronary heart disease occurs when fatty substances build up in the coronary arteries, blocking blood flow to the heart. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, or COPD, is a chronic inflammatory condition in the lungs that restricts airflow to the lungs.
James Caan passed away on July 6 while at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center. He was 82 years old.
His death announcement took many by surprise. Hollywood A-listers and producers including Robert DeNiro, Francis Ford Coppola, and Al Pacino came out of the woodworks to lament his passing.
Caan’s official Twitter account released the following statement:
“It is with great sadness that we inform you of the passing of Jimmy on the evening of July 6. The family appreciates the outpouring of love and heartfelt condolences and asks that you continue to respect their privacy during this difficult time. End of tweet.”
Caan was best known for his roles in The Godfather and Misery. He played alongside John Wayne in the western El Dorado. Caan reputedly was “picky” in his role selection, once stating that he wanted to be “an actor, not a millionaire.” As such, he turned down more roles than he accepted, often going for gritty characters in more serious films.
