Uma Thurman’s Daughter is Following in Her Mother’s (and Father’s) Footsteps

24-year-old Maya Hawke is one of Stranger Things‘ many breakout stars. Starting in the show’s third season as the quirky Robin Buckley, Hawke was instant scene-stealer. Now a star of Netflix’s latest teen drama Do Revenge — a fast streaming success — Hawke is more popular than ever.

And her parents are even more famous.

Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke

Maya Hawke was born in 1998 to celebrity parents Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke: an A-list couple who defined 90s cinema. Both actors were hot off recent success when they met on the set of the dystopian sci-fi Gattaca in 1997. Hawke was fast becoming the face of Gen X cool, with roles in Reality Bites and Before Sunrise while Thurman made an early name for herself as Quentin Tarantino’s muse.

The indie It couple quickly fell in love and wed in 1998. The same year, they had their first child, daughter Maya, and welcomed son Levon in 2002. But Thurman and Hawke separated in 2003, citing Hawke’s infidelity, and their divorce was finalized in 2005. Following the breakup, Hawke began dating the Canadian model Jennifer Perzow, but soon settled down with Ryan Shawhughes — the family’s former nanny. He and Shawhughes share two more daughters together while Thurman had another daughter, too, with ex Arpad Busson.

In 2001, Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman were co-stars in the mostly forgotten Richard Linklater movie Tape. Filmed on a $100,000 budget inside the walls of a Michigan motel room, this strange three-person drama takes place entirely in real-time and is an interesting addition to Linklater’s temporal portfolio. And for anyone curious about what an ugly argument between Hawke and the bad-ass Kill Bill actress might have looked like, Tape — which can be streamed on Amazon Prime — is a fascinating watch.

Meet Maya Hawke

Though Maya Hawke’s name is most associated with Stranger Things, she made her on-screen debut in 2017 as Jo March in the BBC adaptation of Little Women. She’s also appeared in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood as Manson girl Linda Kasabian and in the Netflix horror flick Fear Street Part One: 1994 and is slated to co-star in Bradley Cooper’s upcoming Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro.

She is currently dating musician Spencer Barnett.

‘Do Revenge’

Since premiering on Netflix premiere last week, the high school satire Do Revenge has remained among the steamer’s Top 10 flicks. Pitting Maya Hawke against Riverdale star Camila Mendes, the movie is fluffy, angsty, Gen-Z take on… Strangers on a Train. Sort of.

Reminiscent of her Stranger Things character, Hawke plays Eleanor: an awkward gay teen who, after a classic makeover montage, attempts to take over the entire school.
