Is Kevin Costner’s ‘Yellowstone’ Really Ending? Here’s What We Know

After speculating how long Yellowstone might run for, it looks like the series might finally come to an end. Kevin Costner, who stars as a legendary John Dutton in the Paramount series, has reportedly been less available for shooting the series, according to sources who told Variety and Deadline. This is creating quite a concern, as several are starting to begin to think this is the end of the show. Sources went on to tell Deadline that Costner wanted to only film for a week for the second part of the 5th season.

Apparently, a Network spokesperson stated that the company had “no news to report” whenever they were asked for a statement. “Kevin Costner is a big part of ‘Yellowstone’ and we hope that’s the case for a long time to come,” the spokesperson stated.

Deadline went on to report that creator Taylor Sheridan is moving to end the show in its current form, but is plotting a potential series in which heartthrob Matthew McConaughey could lead.

“Thanks to the brilliant mind of Taylor Sheridan, we are always working on franchise expansions of this incredible world he has built,” the Paramount Network spokesperson revealed in the statement. “Matthew McConaughey is a phenomenal talent with whom we’d love to partner.”

The report of the series ending comes after Costner won a Golden Globe for best actor in a drama series for his performance. The actor couldn’t attend the ceremony due to the severe flooding in California back in January, which flooded roads in Santa Barbara and prevented him from traveling to Beverly hills. In an Instagram post, the actor went on to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press Association as well as the team behind Yellowstone.

“I share this recognition with my castmates, the producers, and our incredible crew,” he stated. “Most of all, thank you to our show’s fans, who love Yellowstone Ranch as if it were their own.”

Back in 2020, Sheridan had spoken with Deadline about how the series could end, saying the show was moving towards that said conclusion. “You can’t walk in circles, waiting to get there, because the show will stagnate,” Sheridan stated. He went on to add that he wasn’t sure when the final episode would air, but wanted the series to “end on an upswing as opposed to a plateau or a descent.”

In 2021 he told the New York Times that he was still working towards the show’s ending. “It will go as many years as it takes for me to tell the story, but you’re not going to see nine seasons of it. No way,” he said.

Yellowstone follows the Dutton family as the owners of the largest Ranch in the United States. The second half of the show’s 5th season is set to return in the summer of 2023, according to Paramount network.
