Celebrating Patti LaBelle, Godmother of Soul, And Her Amazing Songs

Patti LaBelle is one of the most well-known singers, actresses, with a voice that will blow you away. With a career spanning over 60 years, she’s hailed as the Godmother of Soul and has won Grammy awards, been the head of girl groups, and worked with the likes of Babyface, Stevie Wonder, and many others. Her disco single, Lady Marmalade was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. Patti Labelle and the Bluebelles released songs like “Over the Rainbow” and “I Sold My Heart” to The Junkman“.

Recently the singer was on Verzuz, a with Gladys Knight of Glady Knight and the Pips. Patti’s “All Right Now” was put against “Best Thing that Ever Happened to Me”. When you’ve been blessed (Feels like heaven) against “On and On”. My love, Sweet Love went against Gladys’ “Midnight Train to Georgia”, and others like the “Right Kinda Lover” and  “Kiss away the Pain” were also performed.

 

Somebody Loves You Baby

The hit was written by Labelle was on her 1991 album Burnin’. The song was later sampled by rapper Plies on Definition of Real. LaBelle’s hit reached number on the Billboard r&B charts in early 1992. The full title is Somebody Loves You Baby You Know Who It Is).

Stir It Up

After splitting with the Bluebelles, (who changed their name to Labelle in the early 70s) in 1976, Labelle released her debut album. It featured You are my friend and was followed by “New Attitude” as a single. New Attitude and Stir it up were so successful that they got constant radio play, crossing over to the mainstream pop audience.

Originally recorded for her ninth album Be Yourself, it was also on the soundtrack for the James Bond License to Kill. The lyrics travel through a conversation between two lovers, naturally. Three years after the film’s release, Celine Dion covered it for her album, Celine Dion, her second album in English. The video was shot the day after Labelle’s sister died, so the context is darker, as Labelle sings in a church.

On My Own

Duet On My Own was recorded for Winner in You, LaBelle’s eighth album. She wasn’t sure it was going to be a hit, because, she wanted to make something that she loved, she thought it would go fairly unnoticed. But when it was turned into a duet with Michael McDonald (1986), it became even more of a success.

If You Don’t Know Me By Now

Originally written for (The Bluebelles) later called LaBelle was first recorded by The Dells in 1972. Patti Labelle started performing it in 1982 and later recorded it for her Patti album, in 1985. Ciara, Seal, and Rod Stewart have covered this one, and country music singer Martina McBride.

New Attitude

Recorded for the box office hit Beverly Hills Cop, New Attitude was written by Aharon Robinson, Bunny Hull, and Jon Gilutin. It was one of the songs that took Patti’s career to a new level. The music video was also Patti’s first to film!

If Only you Knew

From “I’m in love Again”, the singer’s sixth album, this track spent a month in the No. 1 spot on the r&b chart. With it, the 20-year-old had her first crossover pop song, following shortly after “Lady Marmalade”.

I Don’t Go Shopping

From Released, LaBelle’s fourth album performed moderately on the charts. Following its release, she was released from her contract with Epic and resigned with Philadelphia International Records. She has only performed it a handful of times.

It’s Alright With Me

It’s Alright With Me is the title track and the third album released on Epic records by Patti LaBelle. The album features “Come What May” and “What’cha doing to me”.

Superwoman

Not only a duet, by a trio between Gladys Knight, Dionne Warwick, and Labelle, recorded the song, originally recorded by Karyn White. They have performed the song multiple times including on The Oprah Winfrey Show and it reached a top 20 hit spot.
