The boy, a fifth-grader, has been identified as Ian Sevostjanov.
According to the Tampa Bay Times, 49-year-old Olga Sevostjanov sent the boy to his room to address “a behavioral issue as he was preparing to go to school.”
It’s not yet clear how the boy got access to the handgun that he fired once with fatal results. He was pronounced dead at the scene after an attempt by emergency responders to save his life.
The incident is being ruled a suicide.
Sevostjanov’s brother and father, Leonid Sevostjanov, were not home at the time. When they got to the apartment, they were said to be “overcome with grief.”
During a press conference, Clearwater Police Chief Dan Slaughter called the incident a “tragedy in all respects.”

“It’s a tragedy in all respects,” he said. “But it’s very early in the investigation for us to really discuss or identify exactly what the manner of this tragedy was.”
A woman who knew the family was shocked.
“They’re very protective of their kids,” Patricia Rudd told WFTS. “Shocking, I cannot imagine what they’re going through right now.”
A neighbor told Fox 13 that from everything she’d seen Ian Sevostjanov seemed like a happy child.
“He’s very intelligent, smart, cordial and just a happy kid,” Lesley Sarchione said. “He played with all the other kids. They used to play soccer right in front of my apartment every night. I can’t imagine how it’s going to be for the other kids when they find out.”
