Soldiers who fought in the Vietnam War surely could’ve used some breaks. A man named Chick Donohue did his part to make sure those breaks were enjoyable. Donohue was a real-life person, whose primary mission was to sneak beer into Vietnam.

His exploits have now been turned into a comedy, entitled The Greatest Beer Run Ever. It will star Zach Efron, Bill Murray and Russell Crowe, and is coming to theaters on Sept. 30. It will also be available on AppleTV+ then.
With a cast like that and a unique true story, the film has the look of a winner. “To show support for his neighborhood friends serving in Vietnam, Chickie Donohue (Zac Efron) decides to do something totally outrageous: travel to the frontline by himself to bring the soldiers a little piece of home — their favorite can of American beer,” the description reads.
“However, what started as a well-meaning journey quickly turns into the adventure of a lifetime as Chickie confronts the reality of this controversial war and his reunions with his childhood buddies thrust him into the complexities and responsibilities of adulthood.”
The biographical comedy-drama is directed and co-written by Peter Farrelly. Farelly is known for Dumb and Dumber, Myself and Irene, and There’s Something About Mary, to name a few.

Vietnam was the site of the most controversial war in American history, lasting for 20 years overall (1955-75). There are plenty of strong feelings about it, and many opposing viewpoints.
But one thing most could’ve likely agreed upon was the importance of staying hydrated. And the importance of trying to enjoy a few cold ones while fighting for your life.
Donohue did his best to make that happen, and now those efforts are being recognized in film.
