Trump calls the “unverifiable” report about his Russian grooming “fake news”

A Buzzfeed report published on Tuesday references a shady and unsubstantiated document circulated among Washington insiders that alleges that Donald Trump “has deep ties to Russia” and goes so far as to suggest that the president-elect has been groomed by the Soviet Union for years. Throughout the article, the authors note that the claims are “unverified” and that many of the claims made in the article are completely “unverifiable.” The report references a dossier which “which is a collection of memos written over a period of months” that includes “allegations of contact between Trump aides and Russian operatives, and graphic claims of sexual acts documented by the Russians.” Specifically, the document, which is entitled “US Presidential Election: Republican Candidate Donald Trump’s activities in Russia and compromising relationship with the Kremlin” alleges that “Trump participated in sex parties in the city (St. Petersberg).”

The viral news site stated that their reporters have been “investigating alleged facts in the dossier but have not verified or falsified them.” They also reported that both President Obama and President-elect Donald Trump has received the document. The document is supposed to originate from a “a person who is understood to be a former British intelligence agent.” Many news agencies have been hesitant to touch the report (which has been floating around in journalism and political circles for months) with the Buzzfeed article marking the first such story.

Trump’s pundits have fired back hard against the report. Michael Cohen, a lawyer who often represents the president-elect, told Mic that “somebody is having a lot of fun at your expense,” saying “this fake news nonsense needs to stop.” Cohen is mentioned several times in the report and it claims that he held clandestine meetings with top Russian officials. The New York Post published an op-ed by conservative writer John Podhoretz blasting Buzzfeed, Podhoretz wrote that “there is literally no evidence…that any single sentence in these documents is true.”

Trump took Twitter to condemn the report, calling it “fake news” and suggesting that we are living in Nazi Germany.

Trump’s tweet blaming the intelligence agencies for this “leak” also marks a new chapter in his ongoing strife with national intelligence agencies.
