Guevara is a former beauty pageant queen star. She has been sentenced to four years in prison for stealing $1.7 million worth of vintage wine. The 28-year-old and her 49-year-old boyfriend, Constantin Dumitru stole the bottles from Atrio, an upscale restaurant in October 2021.
The Details
Police have reported that the heist was planned in “minute detail.” CNN reports that everything took place when the couple was staying at a luxury hotel attached to the restaurant. Additional details were obtained via the court ruling. The couple fled from the restaurant with 45 bottles of wine. They hid the stolen goods in bags and wrapped the bags in several hotel towels to make sure they didn’t break.
Two of the bottles were vintage 19th-century French vineyard Chateau d’Yquem wines. They were priced at $47,000 and $371,000.
The Heist
The night of the robbery, the couple went on a guided wine tour of the restaurant’s cellar. Guevara called the hotel’s front desk and ordered room service around 2 a.m. The only front desk employee working that night brought Guevara the salad she ordered. During that time, Dumitru stole an electronic key card that granted him and his girlfriend access to the wine cellar.
The key card they stole ended up not giving them the access they desired. Guevara then made a second call to the front desk and ordered a dessert. Dumitru stole another key card, hoping that it was the one that would unlock the cellar.
The couple was arrested while trying to cross the Albanian-Croatian border located 1800 miles from where the crime took place. According to the news outlet, El Pais, the sentence has not been handed down yet.
