A recent development in the Idaho University murder case reveals that it wasn’t one of the surviving roommates who found the scene of the crime, but rather a friend of one of the victims. According to NewsNation, Ethan Chapin’s closest friend was the one who discovered the deceased bodies of him and his girlfriend Xana Kernodle in the same bed.

It had previously been reported that one of the surviving roommates, Dylan Mortensen, found the bodies and called 911 from her phone eight hours after the murders. NewsNation has clarified that it was Chapin’s longtime friend who used Mortensen’s phone to call 911 but hasn’t disclosed the friend’s name.

The fact that the survivors were trapped in their bedrooms for hours following the homicides deeply highlights the level of terror they must have been feeling.

As of December, Bryan Kohberger, a former Ph.D. student at Washington State University, was taken into custody for the murder of the four students. He has been charged with four counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony burglary. Despite being held in the county jail, Kohberger has denied any involvement in the crime.

The news comes after it was revealed that slain student Xana Kernodle reportedly fought back against Kohberger which resulted in her suffering noticeable defensive wounds on her hands. According to a source close to the investigation, the student “put up a fierce fight when the attacker set upon her, repeatedly grabbing the attacker’s knife, so much so that she sustained deep cuts to her fingers and that her fingers were nearly severed.”

Sources stated that she was the last of the four students to be killed at the off-campus home in Moscow on November 13th. Childhood best friends, Madison Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves, who were sleeping on the same bed, were the ones to be killed first. The noise is said to have alerted Kernodle and Chapin, who were on the second floor at the time of the attack.
