Three Tons Worth of Drugs Found in Pacific Ocean, Dubbed ‘Cocaine Shark’

It’s a boat, it’s a whale, it’s … three tons of cocaine?

That’s how much was spotted in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, and thankfully, a shark didn’t get to it. Sharks are aggressive enough as is. Just imagine them all drugged up.

The coke was identified by New Zealand police, who found it mysteriously floating in a remote part of the Pacific Ocean. It was estimated to be worth about half a million dollars in cocaine funds — the exact amount depends largely on the type of cocaine and purity level when you’re selling it on the street.

Anyway, how did the cocaine get there?

That is what authorities are trying to figure out. The drugs were packaged in “bricks,” tied together via string and floating on buoys. So it was clearly all laid out by design.

“Cocaine Shark”

As an interesting aside, a new film, Cocaine Bear, is already all the rage after the trailer has been released (as we relayed here). The dark comedy is based on the true story of a bear who stumbled on some cocaine in Georgia in the 1980s. So needless to say, people who heard about the cocaine in the Pacific Ocean had some fun with the idea of a “cocaine shark.”

The people who probably don’t think this is funny? Yeah, drug smugglers — who are out three tons of cocaine.

“There is no doubt this discovery lands a major financial blow right from the South American producers through the distributors of this product,” New Zealand Police Commissioner Andrew Coster said, via Indy100.
