Jeff Goldblum Had a Secret Wish to Become an Actor When He Was a Young Boy

Jeffrey Lynn Goldblum was born on October 22, 1952, in West Homestead, Pennsylvania. His mother was a radio broadcaster and a kitchen appliance saleswoman, and his father was a physician. He had two brothers and one sister, but one brother, Rick, passed away at age 23 after contracting dysentery while traveling to Africa.

Jeff Goldblum was introduced to theatre when he was a kid. His mother brought him to see children’s theater, and he was immediately affected by it. He told Parade, “I was struck by the joyfulness of it. It turned me on. It was magical.”

After that, around age 10, Goldblum was cast as a lead in a summer camp production of Belle of the Balkans. His mom helped him practice and the performance was in an aesthetic theater. The setting and feelings once more settled into his soul, making him long for more.

“After, I was totally exhilarated and tingly, and I decided that day,” Goldblum told Parade. “I kept it secret for years. By the time I was in high school I was obsessed. Every day I’d write on the steamy shower door, ‘God, please let me be an actor,’ and then I would wipe it off.”

By the end of high school, Goldblum was acting in off-Broadway productions. He said that his father, who once also wanted to be an actor, went backstage, and hugged him after his first show.

Goldblum’s Fantastic Rise to Success

From that point on, Goldblum’s career took off. He has starred in numerous hit films including the Jurassic Park and Independence Day franchises and The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou. He’s starred in beloved TV shows such as Portlandia and Law and Order. And he’s won several awards, including the Saturn Award for Best Actor (The Fly), The Boston Society of Film Critics Award for Best Ensemble (Life Aquatic) and three awards for Best Ensemble in Wes Anderson’s The Grand Budapest Hotel.

He recently made his return as Ian Malcolm on Jurassic Park Dominion (2022) and has several films and TV series in pre- and post-production phases.

Goldblum is also a world-class jazz pianist. He plays piano with The Mildred Snitzer Orchestra and has been part of two studio albums.

It seems that all those secret shower door messages to God really paid off!

How Jeff Goldblum and Emilie Livingston Met

Jeff Goldblum told Wired that he met Emilie at the Equinox gym on Sunset Boulevard in LA. She was working out by herself, and he was immediately taken aback.

“I saw her from across a crowded room and I marched up to her, entranced, and began some kind of conversation,” he said.

He elaborated to Parade that he kept pursuing her after that. “I talked to my friends about her. I was like a teenager. She brought that out in me.”

Livingston told Goldblum that she was studying acting and he invited her to his house, offering to help her with her monologue. He said that she didn’t know who he was at the time. They would date for two years.

In July 2014, Emilie posted a photo of the two of them embracing in a store and said he’d proposed a few days earlier. Goldblum had been married twice before, to Patricia Gaul and then Geena Davis. But this marriage would be different because it eventually led to kids!

“Jul 8 he proposed @ our fave #okstore. I was taken over by tears of joy n ecstasy! We picked the ring 2gether #inlove” she wrote on Twitter.

Jeff and Emilie immediately flew to Maui. Less than an hour after posting about the proposal, she posted a second photo to Twitter showing off her ring while standing in front of the Haleakala volcano.

Jeff and Emilie’s Children

Emilie Goldblum gave birth to their first son, Charlie Ocean, on July 4, 2015. They had a second son, River Joe, on April 7, 2017.

The beautiful family of four is enjoying life to the fullest. A couple days ago, Emilie posted a video to Instagram to show how she was surprising Jeff with a vacation to Italy for his 70th birthday.

Emilie once told Vol Up 2 that being married to Jeff is a daily blessing. “Every day, my whole day with Jeff is beautiful, silly, enchanting, inspiring, and he challenges me to be a better person,” she said. “Overall being his wife gives me purpose to my life, to take care of him, to take care of each other.”

Finally, when speaking about being a mother, Emilie said that she gets “a kick” out of observing children’s “wonderment.”

“It’s nice to care for someone else, for his happiness, for his well being, for his everyday routine,” she told Vol Up 2. “His needs are more important than my own. Feeling that profound sense of selflessness is quite spectacular. Watching him look at nature for the first time, his infinite sense of wonderment, how everything is new for the first time. I can see through his eyes, allowing me to see the world with a renewed sense of wonderment. I get a big kick out of that.”

Emilie Livingston Goldblum’s Tremendous Talents

Emilie was born on January 4, 1983, making her about 30 years younger than Jeff. She was born in Ontario, Canada, and her mother is French.

Emilie became fascinated with dance at a young age when her older sister was taking ballet classes. Emilie would sneak off and join classes when their mom wasn’t looking. Eventually, she was placed into classes without having to sneak and then started doing gymnastics.

Emilie was subsequently offered a chance for intensive gymnastics training at the Novogorsk camp in Moscow from the ages of 11 to 16. In 1999, she won the gold medal at the Pan-American Games in Winnipeg, Manitoba, while representing Canada. She went on to place 17th in rhythm gymnastics at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.

Emilie once played Rihanna’s body double and a dancer in Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets. She was Emma Stone’s body double in La La Land. She’s notably appeared as a solo aerialist at the 88th Academy Awards during The Weeknd’s Oscar-nominated song, “Earned It.” And she’s also performed with Cirque du Soleil!

Presently, when Emilie isn’t rocking the audience’s socks off with her stellar aerial and contortionist movements, she works as an Intuitive Stretch and Body Movement Coach. You can check out her tutorials on her YouTube channel here.
