Local resident Sara Vale recorded the incident from the safety of her home. “That car is going out to the ocean!” she can be heard saying.

The car belonged to a family that lived near Stanwell Park, where the floods seemed to be at their most powerful. Eventually, the car came to a halt on some rocks near the sea.

Prior to experiencing the raging floodwaters, Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology issued Severe Thunderstorm Warnings for the region. That includes heavy rainfall, heavier winds and even some hail. Several cities recorded gusts of wind that hit 60 mph.

More than 500 distress calls were placed during the storm, the New South Wales Emergency Service said.

“Conditions right now are very hazardous – a number of schools have closed and school bus trips have been canceled due to the weather,” NSW SES Southern Zone Deputy Commander Sharon Fox said as conditions were still quite intense across much of the Illawarra and south coast regions.
