The gunman was eventually killed by police. He was said to be a former employee of the Old National Bank in downtown Louisville, where the incident took place.

Police exchanged gunfire with the suspect, though LMPD Deputy Chief Paul Humphrey said it’s unclear if the suspect was shot dead by police or if he took his own life.

Two police officers were among the eight injured and one is in critical condition at the University of Louisville Hospital, per reports.

Also, Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said one of his friends was killed and another injured in the ordeal.

“I have a very close friend that didn’t make it today,” he said tearfully, adding he hoped his injured friend “is going to make it through.”

Witnesses said the gunman was carrying a long assault rifle.

“He just started firing,” a witness told WHAS11. “I didn’t see his face. We were in the conference room. Whoever was next to me got shot, their blood’s on me.”

The bank was not yet open to customers when the attack occurred, so presumably, the majority of the victims worked at the bank near Slugger Field. Police arrived within minutes of the first shots, according to reports.

One woman said she was driving by the bank in the morning and saw an injured man lying on the front steps. Some windows at the bank appear to have been blown out.
