Prince William and Kate Middleton have now inherited new titles after the passing of Queen Elizabeth II. The royal couple is now Prince and Princess of Wales. Kate is the first to be honored with the title since Princess Diana.

The news of the new titles was quickly trending on Twitter after King Charles III had announced the new couple had new titles. They were formally known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Several people had mixed reactions to the news, with some celebrating Kate for her new role. Others decided to remember Diana, who first assumed the role of Princess of Wales in 1981. Ever since her death in 1997, the title has been vacant, until now.

King Charles III Delivers Speech After Death of Queen Elizabeth III

“Today I am proud to create him Prince of Wales, Tywysog Cymru, the country whose title I’ve been so proud to bear,” King Charles stated during his message from Buckingham Palace. “With Catherine beside him, our new Prince and Princess of Wales will, I know, continue to inspire and lead our national conversations, helping to bring the marginal to the center ground where vital help can be given.”

William and Kate’s new titles are now reflected on their Twitter and Instagram accounts.

“This was not automatic,” royal expert Katie Nicholl told ET. “It was upon the wishes of King Charles. Of course those titles are hugely significant. King Charles was the longest serving Prince of Wales this country has ever had.”

Introducing Her Royal Highness Catherine Princess of Wales

“I’m told by Palace sources that Catherine is very well aware of the title that she has now inherited, but she will continue to do what she has done as the Duchess of Cambridge, I believe, carving her own niche within the royal family, pressing ahead in the very humble and modest way that she has done,” Nicholl stated. “Everyone will compare her to the last Princess of Wales, they were sizable shoes to fill. I suspect that Catherine’s success as the Princess of Wales will be making that title her own.”

Charles didn’t appoint a new royal title to Prince Harry or Meghan Marle after they opted to resign from their royal duties. But, he did mention them in his speech, noting,  “I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas.”
