Princess Diana died from injuries sustained in a car accident on August 31, 1997, and a rather unlikely friend said he will never forget their final conversation.

Richard Kay, a journalist who became close to Princess Diana, spoke to her on the same day she died.

“I miss her hugely,” Kay told Holly Williams of CBS News. “I miss her laughter… and I miss that little spontaneous thing where she would call and say, ‘Come to lunch… Do you want to see a movie?'”

Diana was just 36-years-old when she died. She would have turned 61 on July 1.

“I was one of the last four or five people that she called (on the day she died),” Kay said, adding that the conversation “dealt a lot with the publicity that had sort of surrounded those last days and weeks of her life… about how fed-up she was. Now I had heard this before, but this time I thought she really meant it. She talked about leaving the country. She talked about going to America, settling there.”

Princess Diana’s sons, princes William and Harry, have been known to have a strained relationship in adulthood — but Kay said if Diana were still around, there would be no such fraction. She would have managed it, brought them together, Kay said.

“She’d obviously be a very proud granny… she might have remarried,” Kay told CBS. “She might even have had a second family. She wanted desperately to have a daughter or two.”

“I’m sure she’d still want to be making a difference.”
