American Idol contestant Nutsa Buzaladze issued an apology to Katy Perry on this past Sunday’s episode of the popular competition series. The apology comes after Perry stated that Buzaladze needed to behave with “more grace” on the previous episode of American Idol.

Last week, American Idol featured the show’s duet round. During the duet round, Buzaladze’s partner Carina DeAngelo told the judges, “We had a couple of issues last night… some people wanted to sleep instead of working.” This prompted Perry to make the statement that triggered Buzaladze’s apology.

Nutsa’s Buzaladze’s Instagram Apology

On the latest episode of American Idol, Buzaladze officially apologized to Perry, saying, “I wanted to tell my side of the story and I felt so bad I was frozen. I didn’t want to bring negative energy so that’s why I didn’t say nothing. I didn’t speak up because I didn’t want to cry on stage. After I left the stage I was just destroyed. So I wanted to apologize for that.”

Perry responded to Buzaladze by saying, “That is great. That’s so wonderful and Nutsa, what I meant by grace is that it’s OK to be determined and ambitious and edgy and strong but also with grace. I really relate to you because I know what’s like to be a strong woman… to want to be strong and to never break and feel like nothing can ever get to me but that’s not real.” Perry has recently come under fire online for her behavior towards contestants, but Buzaladze seems to think Perry’s statement was not out of left field.

Buzaladze followed up her in-person apology with an Instagram post, which featured a video depicting the incident from last Sunday’s episode. The lengthy caption of the post partly read, “Frankly, I was mentally destroyed after this performance, even though I tried really hard to stay strong, you probably all noticed how upset I was. I thought it passed already but the video brought back those memories and feelings of sadness… and it’s hard to cope with it, but because this is a contest – not a concert but a contest I try to stay strong, otherwise it will be hard to go further – that’s life…”
